Naatu Naatu winning an Oscar is terrible news

The news of Naatu Naatu winning an Oscar, over a week ago, may have surprised many, but for others, it came as a shocking disappointment. The song, which features heavily in the hit Telugu-language film RRR, has been widely criticized for its poor musical quality and lack of artistic merit. While accepting the Oscar, composer MM Keeravani said the song was “the pride of every Indian”.

The current population of India is 1,416,681,447 (140 crores) as of Sunday, March 19, 2023, based on Worldometer elaboration of the latest United Nations data. Surely, Keeravani cannot be speaking on behalf of 1,416,681,447 people!

One of the main issues with Naatu Naatu is the simplistic and repetitive nature of its lyrics. The song consists of little more than a few phrases repeated over and over again, with no real depth or meaning. This lack of substance makes it difficult for listeners to engage with the song on an emotional level, which is an essential aspect of any good piece of music.

Another major problem with Naatu Naatu is its tune. The melody is grating and uninspired, lacking the complex rhythms and harmonies that are characteristic of truly great music. Even worse, the song features little to no variation in its musical structure, making it feel like a never-ending loop of monotonous noise.

A worrying trend for the music industry

Despite these significant issues, the most troubling aspect of Naatu Naatu winning an Oscar is what it says about the state of the music industry. It suggests that mediocrity is now the norm and that artistic merit is no longer a requirement for success. This is a worrying trend, as it means that truly talented musicians may be overlooked in favour of those who are simply good at marketing themselves.

Naatu Naatu winning an Oscar is terrible news
We can only hope that in the future, the Oscars will reward truly talented musicians and not just those who happen to be popular at the time.

Not many will say it for fear of being ridiculed, but yes, Naatu Naatu winning an Oscar at the 95th Academy Awards is not good news for music lovers everywhere. The song’s simplistic lyrics, uninspired tune, and lack of artistic merit make it a poor example of the kind of music that should be celebrated at the highest levels. Thankfully, this song won an Oscar and not a Grammy! For music aficionados, that’s a relief.

One can only hope that in the future, the Oscars will reward truly talented musicians and not just those who happen to be popular at the time.
