International Women’s Day 2025, Special

Actress, beauty queen, biker, pilot, politician, lawyer, fitness enthusiast, marathoner, and above all, a woman who has seamlessly woven multiple roles into the fabric of her life. For her, diversity is not just a word—it is the essence of human existence. That’s Gul Panag.

“The most fundamental human trait is diversity,” she says. “We are inherently multifaceted, which sets us apart from our simian ancestors. The neocortex, the frontal part of the brain, was the last to develop and gave us the ability to think, assess, and adapt dynamically. This ability to do more with the same resources and time makes us unique,” she adds.

Gul believes that adaptability and versatility have always been the driving forces of human progress, and for women, this is even more crucial in today’s world. “Women have always been expected to wear many hats, but they should never let societal expectations define their limits. Instead, they should embrace their ability to be more, do more, and achieve more. There’s no way around it.”

The Balancing Act: Navigating Work and Family

The challenges women face in balancing work, family, and personal aspirations are immense. The traditional roles assigned to men and women in society have created an imbalance where women are required to prove themselves in every sphere.

“You have to work as if you have no children, and mother as if you have no job,” Gul states matter-of-factly. Unlike men, who can often compartmentalise their roles, women must constantly juggle their responsibilities. Whether as a teacher, lawyer, journalist, entrepreneur, or artist, she is always balancing multiple roles. The struggle is real, and the pressure is immense, but Gul believes that women must own their ability to multitask and turn it into their strength.

“Fathers can often compartmentalise their roles; being fully present at work and then coming home to simply be ‘dad’. Women don’t have that luxury. At work, they are still thinking about home, and at home, they are still mindful of work responsibilities,” says Gul.

Although society is evolving, true equality is still a distant goal. Women today face the ongoing challenge of proving their worth. Instead of letting this pressure hold them back, Gul encourages women to harness it as motivation for their ambitions. “We are limitless,” she states.

Women have Limitless Possibilities

If Gul could leave a message in a time capsule for the women of the future, it would be this: “The more things change, the more they remain the same. Don’t let go of your dreams, because the only limitation you have on yourself is the one you set for yourself. We are limitless. We are capable of doing so much.”

Her ability to push boundaries and reinvent herself continuously is what makes Gul Panag’s journey truly inspiring.

Her journey itself is proof of this limitless potential. She fought an election, pursued a Master’s in Political Science, earned a law degree, and even became a licensed pilot—one of the few actors globally to do so. “Flying was a life skill I wanted to acquire,” she says.

Gul’s thirst for knowledge and self-improvement has always been a defining characteristic of her personality. Unlike many, she does not believe in staying confined to one career path. “Why should we be defined by just one thing?” she asks. Her ability to push boundaries and reinvent herself continuously is what makes her truly inspiring.

A Journey of Passion and Perseverance

From starring in some of India’s most acclaimed films and web series to breaking stereotypes as a biker and fitness enthusiast, she continues to challenge the status quo. “People are often surprised that someone who rides a bike and flies a plane can play complex roles on screen. But that’s the point—why should we be boxed into one identity?”

Gul’s acting career is an extension of her belief in versatility. She has played powerful roles in films like Dor and Manorama Six Feet Under, proving that content-driven cinema can leave a lasting impact. More recently, she has been a part of highly successful web series like The Family Man and Paatal Lok, further showcasing her range as an actor.

But for Gul, acting is just one part of her journey. She is just as passionate about pushing her physical and intellectual limits. “I went back to college, finished my Master’s in Political Science, fought an election, had my son, felt that I needed a new purpose, so I enrolled in law school,” she shares.

For Gul, learning never stops. She believes every new skill adds a new dimension to one’s personality.

The Woman Who Wouldn’t Trade Her Life for Anything

When asked if she could swap lives with any woman, past or present, Gul’s answer is simple. “I have had the unique opportunity to do so much. If I could be born again, I would want to be born as my parents’ daughter, as Rishi’s wife, as Nihal’s mother—because it has been such a privilege.”

For Gul Panag, life is not about chasing titles or achievements. It is about embracing the journey with gratitude and being present in the moment. “I may be better off or worse off tomorrow, but one thing’s for sure—I will always be grateful for the path that brought me here.”

Her gratitude is deeply rooted in her upbringing. She credits her family for instilling in her the values of hard work, and the courage to challenge norms. “I come from a family that never set limitations on me. That’s why I’ve never set any on myself.”

A Message to Women Everywhere

Gul Panag’s story is a story for women of all ages. She reminds us that we do not need to conform to a single mould. We can be everything we aspire to be—fearless, ambitious, compassionate, and strong.

She believes that every woman has the potential to shape her destiny. “Your dreams are valid. Do not let anyone tell you otherwise. The world may set expectations for you, but only you decide who you truly want to be. The only thing stopping you is the belief that something is stopping you. Break that mindset and the world is yours,” she signs off.
