The essence: All said and done, this was a good paid holiday for the start cast.

Dinesh Vijan who makes his debut as a director with Raabta is all at sea. He fails to make a sensible connection between the past and present lives of the lead cast and instead goes on to can some insipid reels for almost 60 minutes wherein Sushant Singh Rajput and Kriti Sanon are put through the grind without a sense of purpose in their performance, nor character. This can be seen time and again when the two look awkwardly at the camera not knowing how to take the scene forward.

It’s painful to see these two talented actors being thrown into the deep without the support of a lifeboat (read, a proper script).

But 60 minutes later, Jim Sarbh steps out of a helicopter and injects some life into the proceedings. Mind you: nothing has changed; even his role has no meaning or direction. But the manner in which he makes his character standout so beautifully speaks volumes of his ability to turn a dead script on its head, if only to shine whenever he is on screen.

This guy is brilliant: a drop in his voice at crucial time whilst delivering a dialogue, that subtle use of his hands and fingers to convey an emotion and the swirl of his head to get the impact of the moment… Sarbh is a thesaurus on acting.

But even his brilliance will not lift the gloom or doom this movie is fated to have. The script is wafer-thin just like the job Shiv (Sushant Singh Rajput) holds in a bank somewhere in Europe. He has a mandatory sidekick in Varun Sharma. What a sad decline for Sharma from his debut as Choocha in Fukrey. Every film after that has been a disaster as far as character build-up is concerned for him—it has been an extension of Choocha.

As for Kriti, this is a talented actor and she needs a sensible script to back the talent she displayed three years ago in Heropanti. Ditto Sushant.

All said and done, this was a good paid holiday for the start cast.
