The essence: Nidhi Agarwal’s designer needs a counselling session. The poor girl is padded with material that can easily pass off for a mattress! Tiger Shroff has passed muster in his dancing and action sequences, what he needs to focus on is to bring in a range of emotions across his face and the same fluidity in his body language when he is enacting a scene with no props.
Munna Michael has a solid opening of 45 minutes where Sabbir Khan establishes the motive of his characters to a point where debutante Nidhi Agarwal (Dolly) is introduced as a dancer in a hotel. After that, it is all downhill for a film, which I believed would entertain all the way.
Even the tenacity of Nawazuddin Siddiqui in every frame, whenever he is on screen, is not sufficient to salvage the film as it nose-dives with the writing going haywire and the director not knowing how to recreate the magic of the first 45 minutes. It’s a mish-mash of ABCD and and ABCD 2. The funny part is when Nidhi has to perform in the final to earn her prize money. She is on the sidelines on the stage meant for her to perform, shaking a tentative leg, off beat, as Munna Michael (Tiger Shroff) shows us how to groove. She wins. Munna grimaces as he has danced with a bullet lodged into his right thigh!
Nidhi Agarwal’s designer needs a counselling session. The poor girl is padded with material that can easily pass for a mattress! On her part, she needs to go through a crash course in ‘finishing’. Dialogue delivery, conviction in the lines she speaks and walking, all need a complete overhaul. She’s a cross between Mamta Kulkarni and Athiya Shetty.
Nawazuddin Siddiqui (Mahinder) owns the screen whenever he comes on, as his wont. A goon, who has made his loot by grabbing land and selling it for a premium in the capital, Mahinder wants to learn dancing in order to woo the girl he is besotted by. Munna Michael lands in his net when he bashes up his brother in a pub. Impressed with his dance moves, Mahinder agrees to let him go if he teaches him to dance within a month.
Both bond, but the girl Mahinder wants, desires to be with Munna. That’s when complication arises and a dance competition is introduced. We also have Farah Khan, Chitrangadha Singh and Shaan making their appearance as judges to a competition that leaves a lot to be desired, considering the movie is showcasing Tiger’s dancing skills and is supposedly a tribute to MJ.
Tiger Shroff has passed muster in his dancing and action sequences, what he needs to focus on is to bring in a range of emotions across his face and the same fluidity in his body language when he is enacting a scene with no props.
A few scenes between him and Nawazuddin have you inadvertently smiling as the bonding between the two is terrific. Had it not been for Nawazuddin’s presence, I shudder to think what the film would have turned out to be.
