This year’s IPL Mega Auction 2025, scheduled in Jeddah, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, on November 24–25, promises to redefine the tournament.

IPL Mega Auction 2025: The Action Behind the Scenes

Picture this: A room alive with energy, tension crackling in the air. Team owners exchange calculating glances, analysts hunch over laptops decoding numbers, and an auctioneer prepares to turn names into multimillion-dollar deals. Before the sixes, the acrobatic catches, and the nerve-wracking thrillers, the IPL’s most pivotal drama begins here—the Auction.

This high-stakes event isn’t just about buying players, it’s the birthplace of strategies, the launchpad for dreams, and a window into the future of cricket. But for many, the IPL auction remains a puzzling spectacle. If you’re scratching your head to understand everything, here’s a simple guide to the IPL Auction.

A Theatre of Dreams: What Makes the Auction Special?

“The IPL Auction is a place where raw potential meets opportunity,” says Tanvi Lunawat, Director, of Operations at the Institute of Sports Science and Technology (ISST), Pune. “It’s fascinating to see how players’ skills and hard work are recognized and rewarded on such a grand stage. It’s an indication of how cricket has evolved.”

In this extraordinary marketplace, 10 franchises fiercely compete to secure players who will define their fate in the forthcoming season. With a fixed Auction Purse of INR 120 Crores, every decision counts. This budget cap ensures an even playing field, forcing franchises to carefully allocate resources and blend marquee stars with emerging talent.

Mini vs. Mega: Two Sides of the Auction Coin

The IPL Auction has two distinct formats, each offering unique challenges and opportunities:

Mini Auction: Fine-Tuning Excellence
Held annually (except in Mega Auction years), the Mini Auction allows teams to retain their core players while addressing gaps in their squads. With fewer players to buy, teams often spend heavily on specific stars.

Ex-India cricketer Pravin Amre sheds light on the difference: “Players earn better in Mini Auctions since franchises spend more on fine-tuning squads. For instance, the Aussie duo Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc fetched record-breaking bids in the 2024 Mini Auction.”

Mega Auction: The Grand Reset
Held every 3–4 years, the Mega Auction is a transformative event where teams can retain only a handful of players. The result? A blockbuster affair where franchises essentially rebuild their squads from scratch.

This year’s Mega Auction, scheduled in Jeddah on November 24–25, promises to redefine the IPL.

Decoding IPL Retention Rules: Building Teams for the Mega Auction

For the upcoming auction, how many players can teams retain? What about the salaries of retained players, and how does this impact each franchise’s purse? Let’s dive into the answers.

Before tackling these complexities, let’s revisit the basics. Each team must form a squad of at least 18 and at most 25 players, with a maximum of 8 foreign players. The squad will consist of both capped and uncapped players.

Capped players are those who have represented the Indian National Cricket Team in international matches, while uncapped players are domestic talents yet to make their international debut. International players, however, are not categorized as capped or uncapped.

IPL Mega Auction 2025: “At the end of the day, cricket is a team sport, and while sitting at the auction table, team balance plays a major role in buying players around the retained core,” feels Pravin Amre, seen here with Shreyas Iyer, a player expected to ignite the bidding war.

With the basics covered, let’s address the retention rules for the Mega Auction. According to the new IPL regulations, franchises can retain a maximum of six players using retention and the Right to Match (RTM) card. This can include up to five capped players (Indian and overseas) and a maximum of two uncapped players.

This strategy plays a crucial role in team building, as Amre explains: “At the end of the day, cricket is a team sport, and while sitting at the auction table, team balance plays a major role in buying players around the retained core.”

Right to Match: The Game Changer

A Right to Match is a tool that allows teams to buy back a player released by them by matching the highest bid made by another team during the auction. Also, after the original team has matched the highest bid, the new franchise can raise their bid higher once. Then the original team will have to match the new higher bid to get their player back.

A team can use a maximum of 6 RTMs if they have not retained any players and will depend on how many players it has retained already. For example, if a franchise has retained just 3 players then they will have 3 RTMs available to use at the auction.

Auction Dynamics: Base Prices and Bidding Wars

Every player in the auction pool has a base price, the starting point for bids. For elite international stars, this starts at INR 2 Crores, while domestic uncapped players begin at INR 10 Lakhs.

IPL Mega Auction 2025: The IPL Auction is synonymous with jaw-dropping deals. Will Rishabh Pant make a Starc impact?

This year’s auction promises plenty of fireworks. Indian icons like KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Shreyas Iyer are expected to ignite bidding war. Meanwhile, overseas powerhouses like Jos Buttler, Faf du Plessis, and Glenn Maxwell will undoubtedly attract attention.

The surprise entry? James Anderson, the England legend, registered for the auction at the age of 42 with a base price of INR 1.25 Crores. Whether franchises will take a chance on his experience remains to be seen.

Big Spenders and Record Breakers

The IPL Auction is synonymous with jaw-dropping deals. From Chris Morris (South Africa) setting records in 2021 to Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc rewriting history in 2024, the auction often reflects the league’s evolution. With franchises willing to spend big on game-changers, the upcoming auction could see new benchmarks set.

As the IPL heads to Jeddah for the Mega Auction, the stakes couldn’t be higher. With strategies locked in and budgets in place, franchises are ready to shape the future of their squads. The big questions linger: Who will fetch the highest bid? Which team will emerge strongest post-auction?

The world will watch as dreams are turned into reality—or heartbreak—on the auction floor.

Beyond the Auction: Proving Their Worth on the Field

While the auction sets the stage, the real action begins on the pitch. Players will have to prove their worth in the sweltering subcontinental heat, battling for glory and the pride of their franchises.

As always, there’s a mix of calm and chaos. While some owners understand the auction’s long-term implications, others might approach it with the mindset of a real estate mogul—seeing players as assets rather than investments in cricketing excellence.
