The essence: There is absolutely no sequence to the action on screen as the story goes out of the window. Abhinay Deo focusses on style and impact, which sadly is never there.

Exactly five years and a month to this day, Nishikant Kamath regaled us with a taut thriller. Force packed a punch.

The same cannot be said about its sequel Force 2, directed by Abhinay Deo. This one is RAW, pun intended!

In China, three RAW (Research and Analysis Wing) agents are killed, 17 more are on the list. As is the procedure within the government, as explained to us, the officers are never claimed as Indians. One of the RAW agents killed is a friend of ACP Yashvardhan (John Abraham).

Yash is sent on a mission to Budapest to stop further killings of RAW agents and also nab the informer from within. He accompanies KK (Sonakshi Sinha) on this important task. Once there, we are treated to incessant fighting (sometimes to techno beats) and innumerable rounds of cartridges being emptied all over the place.

Very early on, John decides to rip off his shirt. Salman Khan, at least, waits for the last reel.

There is absolutely no sequence to the action on screen as the story goes out of the window. Abhinay Deo focusses on style and impact, which sadly is never there.

Thankfully, he has in his armory Shiv (Tahir Raj Bhasin) who shines in the worst of scenes. Seen in Mardani and applauded for his killer act, Bhasin shines yet again in a tailor-made role that puts the ‘always-on-screen’ John and Sonakshi out of focus. Another actor who comes in for just three minutes and makes an impact is Boman Irani.

The most baffling part is when the HRD minister visits Budapest and Shiv has made plans to kill him. We later realize that almost half of those present at the gathering were a part of the assassin’s gang. Yet, the Minister survives!

The Force franchise has a thing with its villians; five years ago it was Vidyut Jamwal who stole the thunder right from under John’s nose. Today, Tahir Raj Bhasin does the same.

This sequel is ‘forced’, pun intended!
