Blossom Bhatnagar, wife of a naval officer, Captain Sumit Bhatnagar, is Opening Doorz to her journey from a Homemaker to a Marathoner. Running has added a new dimension to her life, filling it with excitement, and a sense of achievement. The Fauji environment and, most importantly, her husband’s support have inspired her along this journey, earning her the title of Marathoner.
Over to Blossom Bhatnagar…
My running journey began in the latter half of 2015, during our regular evening walks at the US Club with my husband. One day, he suggested we try jogging instead. At first, I laughed, thinking he was joking. I was 45 and had never considered myself athletic, so the idea of running seemed unusual, even intimidating.
But once the seed was planted, it began to grow. The thought of trying something new intrigued me, and I decided to give it a shot. Hesitantly, I started by mixing short jogs with my regular walks. Within a few days, to my surprise, I found myself enjoying it. What started as a casual activity quickly grew into a passion. The inner child in me woke up, and soon, I was setting alarms, preparing my running gear the night before, and eagerly looking forward to my early morning runs.

There’s something magical about the early morning air—the calm, the serenity, and the quiet. Running at dawn allowed me to connect with nature and, in those moments of peace, express my gratitude to the Almighty. These runs soon became a daily ritual and gave me a sense of fulfillment. Starting each day with this meaningful practice became an essential part of my life.
I found camaraderie with my Navy running group, Sole to Soul (S2S), led by Captain Sunil Handa, a passionate runner himself. Under his mentorship, and with the companionship of his wife, Ritu—a dear friend and accomplished runner—my love for running continued to grow. Their guidance helped me improve my form and pace, and, eventually, I registered for my first official marathon: Pinkathon 2015 (10K category).
My first marathon was exhilarating and nerve-wracking. Before the race started, I felt a mix of excitement and butterflies in my stomach. Seeing Milind Soman, the ultra-runner and founder of Pinkathon, at the start line was reassuring. As he flagged off the event, my nerves calmed, and I focused on the journey ahead.
The thrill of reaching the finish line for the first time is hard to describe. The support and cheers from bystanders, the encouragement of fellow runners, and the energy of the crowd left an indelible mark on me. Crossing that 10K finish line was one of the most exhilarating moment of my life, and I was hooked. The joy of achieving something I never thought possible filled me with gratitude and pride. But my journey was not without its challenges.
After my first event, I ended up in the ICU due to dehydration. The doctors advised me to reconsider my running goals, pointing out that I was close to 45 and weighed just 44 kgs. However, my heart couldn’t accept this advice. Running had become a passion, giving me joy and motivating me to live with enthusiasm and vigour.
From that point on, I focused on strengthening my body and creating a balanced, disciplined lifestyle. I prioritized my diet, sleep, and physical fitness, adding yoga to my routine for flexibility and endurance. Pranayama helped me synchronize my breathing with my strides, enhancing my stamina and connection to each run. The discipline of yoga, which I had practiced for over two decades, became a great asset, helping me build the endurance needed for long-distance running.

Encouraged by Ritu, I decided to take on a new challenge: moving from 10K to 21K. In August 2016, I registered for my first half marathon—the IDBI Run. Completing the run in 2:46:10 was a major milestone for me, solidifying my belief in the power of the mind over the body. This experience strengthened my resolve and bolstered my self-confidence, pushing me to pursue greater distances.
My journey was further enriched by fellow runners like Alpana Agarwal, a friend and role model who has completed over 100 long-distance runs. Her dedication and accomplishments have been a guiding light, inspiring me to keep pushing forward. My motto is to listen to my body, compete with my own self and cross the finish line without injury. Hence, I run every race at my pace.
At 53, and nine years into my journey, I’ve completed more than 30 long-distance events, including two full marathons, two ultra-marathons, and numerous 10Ks. Each race has taught me something new, whether it’s resilience, camaraderie, or self-belief. Running has transformed my life. Every mile has brought me closer to my true self and helped me find joy, recognition, and identity.
The Tata Mumbai Marathon holds a special place in my heart. Running my first full marathon in this vibrant city, cheered on by Mumbaikars, was unforgettable. The energy along Marine Drive, with supporters offering encouragement, drinks, and love, is an experience I will always cherish. The sheer joy of crossing the finish line, earning my medal after six hours of relentless effort, is beyond words. This milestone motivated me to return for the 2024 marathon and set my sights on 2025.

Beyond my personal achievements, it’s fulfilling to see the pride in my husband’s eyes when he narrates my running journey. His encouragement has been a pillar of strength, and I am grateful to him, my mentor Captain Handa, and my fellow runners, especially Alpana and Ritu, for their guidance and support. I am also grateful to the Almighty for giving me the strength to pursue this dream.
My next event, the IIT Powai Half Marathon, is on October 27, 2024. To all women, especially homemakers, I want to say: there’s no age limit for discovering a passion. All you need is a strong will, a positive mindset, and a desire to explore your hidden potential. Every time I lace up my shoes, I feel a surge of energy as I set out to achieve something meaningful. My Running Mantra: “Run the race at your pace and finish the miles with smiles.”
