This is how I look at it: Pure. Raw. Powerful. Decisive. Incisive. Fluid. An unadulterated, adrenaline-fueled love for the Nation. “This is my country, how dare you ruin it,” I imagined her saying as she instinctively reached out to help a helpless group of students inside a police van. It’s ironic, perhaps iconic, that this incident took place near Shivaji Park, named after the Maratha Warrior Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

The girl did not choose this place. History did. Perhaps the ‘fury’ of the Maratha Warrior was there for all to see in the silent positioning of her body in front of a moving vehicle. Let this sink in, and then let it sink again and again.

Behind her, the ‘Genzerazzi’ clicked away, preparing a post for posterity. No newspaper photographer took credit for this powerful image. Instantly, it flooded everyone’s social media streams. There was no need for biased media to display this courageous act. Social media had already done its job.

She Stopped a Van. I Saw Her Stopping the Media

This is how I look at it: I don’t see a police van; I see the circus our media has become with clowns beaming while the Nation burns. Somewhere along the line, they lost their soul and the meaning of their profession.

It’s no wonder Gen Z has spotted the rot and begun shooing and booing away the “Godi media,” snatching microphones, and sometimes hurling expletives. It’s not right. But what does one do when constantly fed fabricated narratives?

They have sent these jokers packing to their breeding ground, crying more. I feel sorry for them, and I don’t. They are ground reporters, not decision-makers. As we saw, the fury is taken out on low-tier field reporters and camerapersons earning modest salaries, while prime-time anchors remain insulated in their secure studios.

For years, these self-proclaimed ‘guardians of the nation’ have made a business of crushing the truth to build false narratives. Studios have turned into battlegrounds where television anchors rehearse pauses before spewing venom packaged as ‘the story’.

Since when did news become a pawn shop for anchors to rip out the soul of the story? Is it not to present facts and not colour views? Why these hoarse shouting matches and screaming in our living rooms?

She Stopped a Van. I Saw Her Stopping the Media

This is how I look at it: You can only feed a generation pure static for so long before they realise the radio is broken. Imagine this van as the deteriorating Fourth Pillar of Democracy. She is holding it, making sure it does not crack or fall, perhaps imploring it to stop this drivel-driven nonsense pretending to be news.

She is looking through the screen, through the prompters, and the utter lack of courage behind the loud voices. She wonders why they ignored injured students at Jantar Mantar and instead broadcast what many saw as sanitised narratives. She saw the van as the ‘Maniac Media’, and something inside of her snapped.

She was telling the entire corporate-state media apparatus: “Enough of your drivel.”

This is how I look at it: On one hand, you have hours of highly produced television programming, graphics that look like a low-budget war movie, and anchors shouting themselves hoarse to maintain a narrative. On the other hand, you have a girl in a damp grey hoodie, standing in the middle of a road using nothing but her skeleton to declare that the truth matters.

The media vehicle is spineless because it has no core; it moves only because external forces push it. The girl had only a core. She didn’t have a script or a teleprompter. By her own admission later, she didn’t even have a plan. She just had an old-fashioned sense of right and wrong that hadn’t been corrupted by the nightly news cycle.

The youth behind her, recording the standoff on their phones and opening the back doors of moving vans to let their friends out, are rewriting the script. They aren’t waiting for prime-time debates to tell them what to think about their futures. They’ve realised that if you want the truth in this country, you don’t turn on the television; you look out the window.

The tragedy of our spineless media is that it eventually becomes irrelevant. A bully is only terrifying as long as people believe the bully’s version of the story. The moment the crowd laughs, or a single person stands their ground for forty minutes until the vehicle backs down, the spell is broken.

This is how I look at it: The long pauses meant to breed hate don’t create anger anymore; they create boredom. The youth are tired of the theatre, manufactured enemies, and distractions masquerading as news. They want their exams clean, their futures secure, and their voices heard without being labelled criminals.

This is how it should be: When you see someone stand up to a bully without flinching, the bully suddenly looks incredibly small. The illusion breaks. Truth isn’t some magical force that drops from the sky to save us. It only exists when someone decides to live it.

Hate is exhausting. It takes so much energy to keep people angry, to keep them pointing fingers at each other, to keep the television studios swarming with venom.

Truth is much simpler. It’s less complicated. Sometimes, it’s just a girl standing undeterred.

Satyameva Jayate.

THE ONUS IS ON US: If physical intimidation becomes normalised, it sets a precedent where any group can violently drive away a journalist whose reporting they don’t like, effectively destroying whatever ground-level reporting remains. The onus is on us to let truth prevail. Distorted news shouldn’t have a place in the moral framework of a democracy.
