Neha Sharma is no ordinary actor. She is one of the few in Bollywood to immerse herself in the character she portrays to give her producers their due.
That’s what got everyone to sit up and take notice of this dynamite, nine years ago, as she shot to fame with Mohit Suri’s Crook alongside Emraan Hashmi. Over the years, after the high of Crook, Neha has realised that it’s not talent alone that cements your place in Bollywood. “One has to be a million things to get work in the industry,” she once told me.
But there is no doubting Neha’s inherent beauty of her art. She has been consistent in her performances, impressing and improving with every outing. Neha is one of those actors who does not just enact a scene; she immerses herself in a plot, whatever may be its content, or dialogue. And more importantly, she makes even the most mundane scene watchable just by the way she delivers a dialogue, maintains those pauses and express with her eyes. Her body language is terrific.
One bright scene that stands out for me is from Jayantibai Ki Luv Story where she is locked in a room with these two characters who try to run her down, when she is auditioning for a role. Any ordinary actor would have made a mess of this scene. But not Neha—she brought dignity into her character as she enacted the scene with her eyes and a slight quiver of her lips. As an audience, your heart went out to her character!
With a cameo in Teri Meri Kahani, she stole a march over Priyanka Chopra and Shahid Kapoor. Remember the scene when she throws out Shahid’s bag from the balcony and wags a finger at him? Full-on emotions.
Life in Bollywood has not been all that rosy for Neha as she has found out. But she has come to terms with the way the industry functions and has made peace with it. Work is flowing, and Neha is busy, both here and down south. Her PR and Networking, although she agrees has to be aggressive, is dismal. I guess that’s just the way she is—she prefers to put her energies in her work.
As she runs into her 10th year in Bollywood, Opening Doorz wishes her the very best and prays that even bigger Doorz Open for her in the coming years.
For me, personally, Neha Sharma is among the top 5 performers.
