Bollywood: Stars of the ’50s and ’60s

Ashok Kumar Ganguly (1911-2001)

He was called ‘Dadamoni’ by everyone in Bollywood. Born in Bhagalpur, Bihar, Ashok was the son of a lawyer and Deputy Magistrate. He studied law in Calcutta but gave it up to join his mentor and brother-in-law Shashadar Mukherji at Bombay Talkies as a laboratory assistant. He made his debut as an actor in Jeevan Naiya opposite Devika Rani and later went on to do several films with her such as Achchut Kanya, Janmabhoomi, Anjaam etc. Along with his brothers Kishore Kumar and Anup Kumar, he made such comedies as Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi and Chalti Ka Naam Zindagi, which were immensely popular. In the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s he deviated towards character roles.

Dev Anand (1923-2011)

Actor, producer and director all rolled into one, Dev Anand was known as the evergreen hero. Formerly called Devdutt Pishorimal Anand, he was born in Gurdaspur, Punjab. Along with his brothers Chetan and Vijay Anand, Dev launched Navketan in 1949, which brought out the talents of a fresh breed of young directors like Guru Dutt, Vijay Anand, Raj Khosla and music composers like S.D. Burman and R.D. Burman. Dev Anand often played the boy- next-door as well as the lover. Dev Anand turned to direction in the 1970’s.
