On a quiet evening at Taj Land’s End today, family, friends, colleagues and admirers will gather… not to mourn, but to remember.
What could have been a sombre prayer meet becomes a Celebration of Life, a tribute to a man who lived fiercely, laughed loudly and loved without restraint.
And at the heart of that celebration lies a letter, one final message, written in the voice of Veeru and addressed to his lifelong friend, Jai.
At Opening Doorz, where our tag line is "Celebrating Life", the sentiment is fitting.
My Dearest Jai,
Yaara, I know you’re despondent. I know you’re sitting there, probably in a corner of that huge house, looking out at the Juhu beach, and feeling that sharp, stinging absence—the silence that I, Veeru, never allowed to settle. You’re likely gripping a cup of cold tea, wishing the whole world would simply stop spinning for a moment, just long enough for you to catch your breath.
I can see the question burning in those expressive eyes of yours: What use was the double-sided coin now?
And my answer is simple, mere dost: the coin was never a charm against death. It was evidence of our friendship against fear. It meant that no matter what challenge came—whether Gabbar, or jail, or the vast, unforgiving emptiness of our own kismat—we always faced it together. But Yaara, you always claimed the outcome of the toss, making me feel lucky… even cheating with death.
Do not mourn, Jai. Do not reduce a life filled with laughter and magic to tears. Today’s gathering at Taj Lands End is a Celebration of Life, honouring that my journey was one beautiful celebration!
Veeru, Opening Doorz… Celebrating Life
I remember saying it often: “Duniya mein achchhe log kam hain, lekin jo hain unko sambhaal ke rakhna chahiye.” (Good people are few in this world, but those who are there should be cherished.) You, Jai, you were always the best I ever found. If I could sing one final message to you, it would be the sentiment from that old tune, that beautiful feeling of unbreakable closeness… Yeh Dosti Hum Nahin Todenge. You are not losing me, Yaara.
Every moment, every success, every failure—we were in each other’s hearts. That connection isn’t severed; it’s just changed. It’s now pure memory, pure soul, pure dosti. It’s indestructible.
You know my philosophy, the one I preached in every drunken confession on screen and every serious talk: “Jab insaan ka waqt achchha nahin hota, toh woh mazaa nahin le paata.” (When a man’s time isn’t good, he can’t enjoy anything.) Jai, my time was fantastic, glorious, sometimes chaotic, but always full of mazza! I drank life down to the last drop, and I did it with you riding pillion, sometimes criticising, sometimes quietly approving.
I lived as the ultimate Yamla Pagla Deewana—the mad, carefree farmer, embracing the world with open arms, ready for a fight or a dance, often both. That is the spirit I leave you with. That is the rhythm you must now keep beating. Don’t slow down the tempo because I’m not there to dance beside you. Turn up the music!
This is where our real life and our reel life must now merge, Jai. Remember Ramgarh? It was broken, terrorised, and hopeless. We didn’t just fight Gabbar; we didn’t just kill him (or allow the police to arrest him, depending on which film cut you prefer!). We cleaned up the system. We restored hope. We gave the weak a platform to stand tall. That was our gift: cleaning up the mess and leaving a better stage for the next act.
The Jai-Veeru Foundation
Now, my friend, we have a bigger Ramgarh—our industry itself. You and I struggled. We slept on benches. We waited years for a break. We were two outsiders who relied on talent and luck.
My final wish is that we spread our inheritance beyond the celluloid. Let’s start the Jai-Veeru Foundation. A platform that finds and funds the next generation of actors, writers, and technicians—from the remotest village or smallest town. A stage where talent gets its first break, and mentorship replaces manipulation.
Talent has to be given a platform to perform. Rest is kismat.
You always knew how to build things, how to structure, how to move mountains quietly. I brought the flair, the fire, the fun. Let’s do it again, mere dost. Don’t waste time on tears for the past. Let’s make a future for the talented.
I’m waiting for your next instruction. This is your cue, Jai. This is the ultimate dillagi.
Aakhri waqt ka hai yeh afsaana. Dillagi ne di hawa, thoda sa dhuan utha, aur aag jal gayi.
Keep the fire burning, my brother. I’ll be watching.
Yours, Veeru.
This is not Veeru’s handwriting, but it is his heart... brought to life by the team at Opening Doorz as a tribute.
