After Dev Anand, if anyone in Bollywood can truly claim the “evergreen” title, it is undoubtedly Anil Kapoor. Known for his energy, charm, and timeless looks, Anil Kapoor has redefined what it means to age gracefully in an industry obsessed with youth and appearances. On his 67th birthday, I still marvel at what makes him an ekdum Jhakaas inspiration!
Anil Kapoor has always been my benchmark when it comes to the ‘Fitness Barometer’. I remember marvelling at his fitness as a young viewer. At the time, 40 seemed “old,” Anil Kapoor, already past that age, looked astonishingly youthful and vibrant. Today, at 67, he continues to defy time, looking no older than 40—still as jhakaas as ever.
Fitness Pioneer and Torchbearer
Anil Kapoor has long been Bollywood’s unsung fitness pioneer. While others chased trends of bulging biceps or six-pack abs, Kapoor embraced a holistic approach to health—one that focused on staying lean, agile, and fit. His disciplined eating habits and consistent workout routine were revolutionary in an era when fitness was often overlooked in the film industry.
One memorable scene from Dil Dhadakne Do perfectly illustrates his philosophy. When his character disdainfully questions his family about a grease-soaked samosa, exclaiming, “Kya hai yeh?” it immediately struck a chord with me. That’s quintessential Anil Kapoor—meticulously conscious about what goes into his body, both on-screen and off.
From Eeshwar to Animal: A Career for the Ages
Anil Kapoor’s journey from Woh Saat Din to Tezaab, Eeshwar, Jaanbaaz, Kishen Kanhaiya, Welcome, and now to Animal is proof of his versatility and passion. Few actors have managed to stay relevant across decades, and Kapoor’s ability to reinvent himself is extraordinary. His performance in Mr. India cemented his status as a legend, while his recent roles in ensemble casts showcase his enduring charm and range.
Not Bulk, But Balance
Anil Kapoor’s fitness philosophy stands in stark contrast to Bollywood’s obsession with bulk. While stars like Salman Khan, Sanjay Dutt, and Aamir Khan ushered in the age of muscle-bound heroes, Kapoor stayed true to his lean and athletic frame. His approach is finding significance in an industry where sustainability is becoming the new mantra.
Take, for instance, television actor Ram Kapoor, who recently transformed from ‘unhealthy bulky’, to lean and fit. While it’s likely that it could have been health concerns that drove the change, one wonders if Anil Kapoor’s steady example played a subtle role in inspiring such shifts. Similarly, Kapoor’s close friend Anupam Kher has recently embraced fitness, and it wouldn’t be surprising if Anil’s influence is a motivating factor.
Inspiring Generations
Anil Kapoor’s impact extends beyond the silver screen. As a father, he’s instilled values of discipline and hard work in his children, Sonam, Rhea, and Harshvardhan, who continue to carry forward his ‘fitness hangover’. For fans and colleagues alike, Kapoor is a benchmark of what’s possible with perseverance and dedication… to bring even unhealthy blood markers to normal and keep them there with a strict lifestyle change.
The Jhakaas Factor
What truly sets Anil Kapoor apart is his infectious energy and optimism. His signature phrase, “ekdum jhakaas,” isn’t just a catchphrase—it’s a reflection of his personality. Whether playing a stern patriarch or a comedic sidekick, Kapoor’s presence lights up the screen and elevates the energy of any scene. For fitness enthusiasts, Anil Kapoor is a reminder to keep striving for the best version of themselves.
Happy Birthday, Mr. India
In the 1988 bollywood blockbuster Tezaab, Anil Kapoor’s character cheekily declares, “Nasik ho yah Bambai, ladkiyan ladkiyan hoti hai, patane ka tarika aana chahiye,” a line that has since become a cult favourite of mine. True to his charming persona, Kapoor’s real-life philosophy carries a similar fitness flair. For him, “Bambai ho ya Nasik, fitness fitness hota hai, sirf exercise karneka tarika malum hona chahiye,” perfectly encapsulates his approach to staying in peak form.
On this special day, we at Opening Doorz celebrate not just Anil Kapoor’s illustrious career but also the lifestyle choices that make him a role model. Even today, 25 years after I started marvelling at this 40-year “Old Man” for looking young and fit, every time I see him on the screen or on Social Media, it is Dil Dhadakne Do time for me, and I guess for all fitness enthusiasts as well.
Happy 67th Birthday, Mr. India! May your holistic fitness journey inspire countless others to live their lives ekdum jhakaas!
